Takashi Murakami

Speaking of "child-like," have you seen the art of Takashi Murakami? He is another popular contemporary Japanese artist. I guess it is not really done in a child-like manner, but instead it looks like very graphic images painted for pre-teens and then distorted. The work follows the "cuteness" aesthetic I wrote about earlier. The artist states that he is following a theory he created called "Superflat."

He explores ideas of commercialism (his images are on everything from mouse pads t0 Louis Vuitton bags), low art, anime, and sexualized imagery that I find very interesting. I saw some of his work a few years ago in Chicago.

  1. I was thinking that we already posted something about this artist, but then I remembered that I talked about him in a presentation last semester. I love his work - some of his sculptures are really don't like, but most of the paintings I think are great - all about the cuteness....
"Popular culture in Japan has also started a phenomenon of “Kawaii” or cute that extends to the artwork, graphic design, and event the fashion of the Japanese youth." (from my paper for the presentation)- I'll email it to you if you want to read it - it's a simple paper about the culture of Japan and a little bit is about the art. I found an article in Psychology Today about "Kawaii" - it was very interesting, I'll see if I can find it online.

  2. Definitely send me the article. Also, I was thinking of doing an Essay on art collaboration. I want to study how other artists (like Takashi Murakami) will use teams of artists to help with their visions and also look at other great intellectual collaborations, such as the letters between Vincent Van Gough and his brother Theo. The Essay can then put this project in context. What do you think? Do you want to co-author it with me, and then it can be part of this whole project?
