Hey Colin - what do you think of my latest art therapy homework? it's very cool to have to create art for homework... anyway, we had to do a dream quest and then create a piece of art based on what we saw - so, I created two paintings to try to show the idea... I dreamt I was on a fishing boat and picked a fish out of the big net (it was actually two fish connected together), then I was standing in shallow water looking for a safe place to put my fish - it seemed very obvious to me that the patch of land with some tall grass was the safest place. The fish was (were) rainbow colored and reminded me of a pack of Lifesavers candy. hmmmmmm, what does it all mean?

Woodcut printing blog
Hey Kelly,
Check out this blog: http://mleeprints.blogspot.com/ It is by an artist in Boston, who creates woodcut prints--really great work. Her prints look very layered, which I would think would be a difficult process with woodcutting.

9-11
As an artist, do you feel compelled to have your work relate to certain historical events? I mean at times, such as today, do you feel your work should blatantly reflect on the significance/sadness of 9-11. Or, should your work simply latently reflect on the tragedy? That is, you reflect personally and than create...not having any particular purpose but for conveying your particular emotions.
I have a lot of trouble with these questions (this question). I approach drawing as a personal diary keeping exercise at times, and at other times I feel that I am drawing/painting/etc. for the specific purpose of showing it to someone or for posterity. Is it truly a reflection of me that will be conveyed to others if I fail to create an image where someone can look at it and say---well, here, he was reflecting on the fiver year anniversary of 9-11? Or am I underestimating people?

the Campaign for Drawing
I just saw this post - The Big Draw - on whipup.net and thought would find it interesting... for more information, go here - Drawing Power -
there are events happening all over during the month of October - you can check the site The Big Draw to find an event near you - there aren't any events listed for the United States, however you can find some internet events...

new Artists foundation
United States Artists... (quote from site) "Welcome to United States Artists (USA). We are a new organization dedicated to the support of America’s finest living artists. After decades of dwindling public support, artists now have a home where they may find significant private funding to ignite the creativity that makes this country great."

Me drawing me drawing me
This is me sitting down on the commuter rail, drawing, basically, my lap. Very weird angle--and it is hard to draw what you see and not try to cheat and draw what you think it should look like.
I had time to fill it in more, but I liked the contrast between the detailed parts and the non-detailed parts. Let me know what you think.
Also, I am coming home tomorrow, so I will have some drawings from the plain. And, more importantly, Melanie and I will see you on Sunday.
