Again, I took a horrible picture of one of my new paintings, but I think you can get the general feel for the piece. The lower left hand corner is not darker than the rest of the piece--that is just my shadow from taking a picture with my iphone. Any way, let me know what you think.

Inspired by Water

new fiber necklace inspired by Silvina Romero

This is one of my new jewelry pieces using fiber: reclaimed yarn and then wrapped and embroidered with cotton embroidery thread.

I had come across the work of Silvina Romero a while back and was very inspired by her use of fiber since I had been unraveling sweaters to reuse the yarn in my own work. I wonder, how does inspiration really work? Am I inspired by her work because it was similar to my own - or is my work similar to hers because I was inspired by her work? It just seems that the more I get into fiber work, the more amazing fiber work I find all around.

here are a couple pictures of my new work - not great photos, I'll take better ones soon. The gray piece with pink spots is made of four 24 x 36 inch canvases - they are not strong enough on their own, but work well together. The other piece is made of 9 square of knitted red cotton mounted on shadow boxes, gessoed, painted, embroidered... it is a piece from my art therapy class, we had to represent significant events in our life. it was an interesting challenge.

Lion Country Safari!!

This piece was inspired by your underlying piece, my trip to lion country safari in Florida, and by an installation piece I saw in high school. Your piece captured a very child-like simplicity, which was the feeling that I had traveling through lion country safari. Melanie and I both had the child-like wonderment in exploring the interactive zoo--it was awesome. The zoo also reminded me of an installation piece Ben Butler did when I was in high school. He had gone on a safari the summer before, and he did a beautiful installation piece in the main gallery at South based on his trip. I wish I had pictures. He had beautiful paintings of all of the various animals on miscellaneous objects like blinds and an abandoned car.

Any way, let me know what you think. I think I like this one the best out of our collaborations.

Yellow Orchid

Here is a painting that I did today. Let me know what you think of the background. This is a watercolor on textured claybord. It is really easy to rework a watercolor and really get into molding certain elements. If I end up not liking this background, it will be easy to paint over the background and make it a dark blue or something.

Utrecht sells these claybords in 6" X 6" (and other sizes). I think you would really like working with this.
