I started a series of portraits based on events that make me think about the "rule of law" and individual liberties, etc. I plan on painting the portraits or scenes quickly, "in the moment," to get my initial reaction, and then writing a short essay about the event and how it impacts my thoughts of the law.
Below is the first piece, based on this story that I read: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/28/world/africa/28uganda.html
This is a story about an outspoken Uganda gay rights activist whose name and picture were published in a local newspaper that encouraged violence against several local gay men. He was subsequently beaten to death. Just horrible.
Let me know your thoughts
I think this is extremely sad. Regardless of whether you believe homosexuality is wrong or not he is a human being.
ReplyDeleteI agree -- I just do not understand how someone can hate so much. I don't understand how the writer and editor and publisher of the article could ignite such evil doing against someone that appeared very smart and considerate of his fellow humanbeings. And I don't understand the people who carried out the violence.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of your new series - the law can be difficult to understand (in terms of fairness) at times since it is not just black and white.
ReplyDeleteThis story is disturbing, and unfortunately not the first time something like this has happened.
I look forward to reading the essays that you write for the art.
